If you have trouble installing or using Windows XP, you may be able to solve the problem yourself. The following tips and instructions can help.

First, we’ll discuss what to do if you encounter problems when you’re installing and setting up Windows XP. Next, we’ll move on to errors you might see after you’ve been using Windows XP for a while, and it suddenly stops responding.

If our troubleshooting tips don’t solve your problem we’ll also point you to a few places where you can turn next.

Troubleshooting Windows XP Setup
The following table lists solutions for problems you may encounter during Windows XP Setup.

Problem Solution
Installation stops because the setup program can’t find the CD-Rom Drive.
• Verify that your hardware is listed in the Windows Catalog (formerly called the Hardware Compatibility List).

• If you’re on a network, try installing Windows XP directly from the network, instead of from the CD-ROM.

• If you’re performing a new installation and you start the installation from Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT, click Advanced Options during Setup, and then copy files to your hard disk.


Setup can't read the CD–Rom Drive.
• Make sure you have a working CD-ROM drive.

• Try cleaning the shiny surface of the CD with damp toilet paper (tissues often have lanolin or other ingredients that leave their own film). If your CD-ROM is dusty or has fingerprints, clean it with a mild soap and soft cloth. Then, dry the surface completely.

• If you think your disk is damaged, you can get a replacement from Microsoft or from your computer manufacturer. You can find contact information for Microsoft on the Contact Microsoft page.


You see a blue screen (also called a Stop error).
• Follow the instructions that appear on the screen.


Windows XP won't install or won't start.
• Verify that your hardware is listed in the Windows Catalog (formerly called the Hardware Compatibility List).

• Temporarily remove all hardware that's not required by Setup (modems, sound cards, and network cards). Then try restarting your computer.

• Make sure that you have the latest drivers, firmware and BIOS for the computer and all hardware. If you don’t know whether you have the latest firmware or an updated BIOS, contact your hardware manufacturer or check their Web site.


There is insufficient disk space.
• You need at least 1.5GB to install Windows XP. You can free up space by deleting files that you no longer need and emptying your Recycle Bin. If you have more than one drive or partition, move files to another drive or partition. A partition is simply a part of a hard drive that functions as if it is its own drive.

• Free up space by removing existing partitions and creating a new partition large enough for installation (+1.5GB).

• Format an existing partition to remove all existing files and create more space.

CAUTION
Removing or reformatting a partition will delete all of the data that exists on that partition.


For Windows XP Professional Only: You are unable to connect to your network.
If you’re confident you have the correct password, check the following:

• Your Caps Lock key should not be on. Windows XP passwords are case-sensitive.

• Your password should be current. If you have recently received the message, "User must change password at next logon," your password may have expired.

• The domain name you used is correct.

• You’re using a recognized user name.

• Your network cable is properly attached to the computer and to the network connection.


For Windows XP Professional only: You are unable to join a domain.
Check the following:

• You are physically connected to a network.

• The domain name you used is correct.

• If you have a network administrator, verify that a computer account exists for you and that the DNS server and domain controller are running.


If none of these steps help solve your problem, join a workgroup instead, and then join the domain after installation.


Note: If you computer has only the minimum required memory, the setup process may take longer.

Troubleshooting Stop Errors
A stop error occurs when Windows XP stops responding. Stop error messages can be caused by hardware or software malfunctions. The error messages appear on a blue or black background.

General Stop Errors
The following steps help you determine the cause of a stop error and how to correct the problem.

To troubleshoot General Stop Errors

1.
Restart your computer.

2.
Make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. Unplug each new hardware device, one at a time, to see if this resolves the error. If it does, go to step 3.

Replace any hardware that proves faulty by this test. Also, try running any hardware diagnostic software supplied by your computer manufacturer.

If this is a new installation of hardware or software, contact the manufacturer for any Windows XP updates or drivers you might need.

If you’ve recently installed software that you think might be causing the errors, you can use System Restore to return your computer to an earlier, more stable state. If your computer functions properly after you’ve restored it, the new software may be the problem. To learn more about using System Restore, read Use System Restore to Undo Changes if Problems Occur.

Click Start and then click Help and Support. Click Get support, or find information in Windows XP newsgroups (under “Ask for assistance”) and then click Get help from Microsoft in the left-hand column.

5.
The problem may be with a driver you’ve recently updated. Windows XP allows you to easily uninstall the new driver and restore the old driver with the Driver Rollback feature. To learn how, read How to Roll Back a Device Driver.

6.
Click Start, click Help and Support, and then click Fixing a problem (under “Pick a Help topic”) for a list of Troubleshooters.

7.
Check the Windows Catalog to verify that all your hardware and drivers are compatible with Windows XP.

8.
If you can start Windows XP, check the System Log in Event Viewer for additional error messages that might help identify the device or driver causing the problem. To view the System Log click Start and then click Control Panel. Click Performance and Maintenance, and then click Administrative Tools. Double–click Event Viewer to open it and then System Log to view.

9.
If you have access to the Internet, visit the Microsoft Support site.

Search the Microsoft Knowledge Base for "Windows XP" and the number associated with the stop error you received. For example, if the message “Stop: 0x0000000A” appears, search for “0x0000000A.”

10.
Using a current version of your antivirus software, check for viruses on your computer. If you find a virus, perform the steps required to eliminate it from your computer. See your antivirus software instructions for these steps. 11.
Verify that your hardware device drivers and your system BIOS are the latest available versions. Your hardware manufacturers can help you determine the latest versions or help you obtain them.

12.
Disable BIOS memory options such as caching or shadowing. If you need assistance, contact your hardware manufacturer.

13.
Run any system diagnostic software supplied by your computer manufacturer, especially the memory check.

14.
Verify that your computer has the latest Service Pack installed. For a list of service packs and instructions for downloading them, go to the Windows Update Web site.

15.
If you are unable to log on, restart your computer. When the list of available operating systems appears, press F8. On the Advanced Options screen, select Last Known Good Configuration, and then press ENTER.

IMPORTANT
When you use Last Known Good Configuration, system setting changes made after the last successful startup are lost.

Still Getting Errors?
If you’re still having a problem with your hardware or software, try the interactive troubleshooters provided in Help and Support Center: click Start, click Help and Support, and then click Fixing a problem (under Pick a Help Topic).

Under rare circumstances, you may need to uninstall Windows XP and return to your original operating system.

To uninstall Windows XP

• Click Start, click Control Panel, click Add or Remove Programs.

• Click Windows XP, click Remove and then follow the instructions on your screen.

IMPORTANT
You cannot uninstall Windows XP if you:

• Changed your hard disk configuration—for example, if you have converted from FAT to NTFS or have created partitions.

• Upgraded from Windows NT 4.0 or Windows 2000 Professional (applies to Windows XP Professional only).

şu an işyerimdeki bilgisayarda aynı sorunu yaşıyorum.tam emin değilim ama sanırım aynı hata mesajını almışız. ben sorunumun donanım kaynaklı olduğunu düşünmüştüm ama sorun sabit diskimin dosya biçimindeymiş. bence ne olursa olsun FAT' den vazgeçme. ayrıca anakart yazılımlarıyla çok fazla uğraşma. daha büyük problemler yaşayabilirsin. eğer işletim sistemi kurabilirsen partition magic kullanarak (bu yazılımı download sitelerinden ücretsiz edinebilirsin) dosya biçimini FAT olarak değiştir. kahrolsun NTFS görüşmek üzere..

bu sorunu ram slotlarından yapabiliyor. aynı şekilde anakartının biosunu güncellemen de gerekli. Burda kullandığın diskin ide olduğunu farzederek yola çıkarsak üreticinin sitesinde disk tools diye birşey war. oradan disk tools u indirip diskini de fabrika ayarlarına geri döndürebilirsin. Sonra 98 işini görüyorsa setupcor ile kurduğunda sorun yaşamazsın. Ama xp istiyorsan bu durumda sp1 den şaşma. sp1 oyun desteği de daha fazla sp2 de çalışmayan oyunlar sp1 de çalışıyor hemde sorunsuz ama yinede sen bilirsin.
